Working at home is both fun and flexible but it requires self-discipline. In order to work productively at home, apart from being self –disciplined, you need to motivate yourself as well to press on. Do not think take motivation as a trivial matter as it can adversely affect your productivity, thus bottom line. Motivation usually sets in when you are not meeting your targets consistently and this will drives down your enthusiasm to handle the tasks at hand. If you are in this situation, you will have to find ways to motivate yourself and move forward. Good news is that, there are appropriate methods you can use to improve the situation. Below are some possible reasons for the lack of motivation and suggestions on how to overcome it.

One possible reason for your lack of motivation could be due to the task you have at hand are boring or distasteful, you can try offering yourself a reward for doing it. On the other hand, you can also enhance the boring task with something you like to do, such as listening to radio program, songs, or music. In addition, you can also break up the boring task into smaller work fragments and do some other tasks after each fragment of work is completed. I used to play my favorite music on the piano in between the boring tasks. This helps me to stay fresh on my mind. By incorporating interesting tasks in between the work fragments, it will help you to be more motivated to carry on.

While working at home, at times, you may come across a difficult project which you are not sure of how to do it. Unlike working in an office with many colleagues, you have no one to consult. This may caused you to be unmotivated to work. However, due to the advance in technology, you can make use of the resources available in the Internet, library and bookstores to find information. Alternatively, you can also approach those people you know whom you think are familiar with the project and can give useful tips. It is good to enlist others’ help for the brainstorming of ideas. Besides, you can plan to do those things that will energize you early in the morning. This will make a good start for the day for you. In addition, at the end of each day, you can write down a list of things to do for the following day. In this way, you can keep track of the work you have accomplished and the outstanding work need to be done. It is also advisable to do all personal tasks at the end of the day.

The lack of food and exercise can cause you to become lethargic and thus, unmotivated to work. Sufficient food is required to provide energy for you to work. But not over eating. Your body requires the essential minerals and vitamins to function properly. Physical exercise is also important. It helps you to combat work stress and keep you fit. Hence, you should take time to do some physical exercise. You will certainly feel re-vitalized after a physical workout. I make it a point to job twice a week in the evening if weather permits. Do not neglect this aspect as a healthy mind is required for thinking and working.
